CONCRETE
Maintaining concrete roofs is important. Many suburbs in Melbourne have roofs so old the entire original coating is gone from the tiles. When this occurs the tiles can become porous and begin to absorb water. Over time, this can add 6-7 tonnes of actual weight to the roof which, in turn, adds extra stress to trusses and the frame of the house.
With a concrete tile roof restoration, your roof will be waterproof and weatherproof for another 20 years. It will also be stronger, as concrete tiles do not reach their maximum strength for 20 years or more. Interestingly, concrete ‘cures’ over time in the same way that in fact that stones become harder over time. If you stand on a new tile it will be more likely to crack as it is still ‘green’ (as if it were a sapling rather than rigid like a fully grown tree).
TERRACOTTA
Terra cotta tiled roofs are a popular selection in Melbourne. Their durability and permanent colouring make them ideal for home construction. The tiles themselves will generally last for up to 100 years and undergo little or no fading throughout their lifespan. Whilst it's not ideal to paint Terracotta tile roofs due to the substance of the tile not being porous, we can restore the tile to its former glory by pressure cleaning, coating the tiles with sodium hydrochloric acid and using a special high-grade gloss coat to give it a magnificent shine.

METAL
Colorbond roofing has been used as far back as 1966. While not immediately popular, by the 90’s it was one of the go to roofing materials. Now, with its low weight, clean lines and aesthetic appeal, it is arguably the most popular roofing choice for homeowners. Being lighter than tiles also improves the thermal aspects of a steel roof at night. The lower mass means that it will cool down more rapidly than tiles so will not radiate as much heat into the home after the sun goes down. It does, however, get much hotter than tiles do during daylight hours. Surface temperatures on a steel roof can exceed 120 degrees Celsius on hot days. That’s hot enough to cook on!
Not only can a quality roofing membrane dramatically reduce this but it can also add decades to the lifespan of your roof.
